Social interventions in mental health
New video presentation from Prof Bryn Lloyd-Evans, Professor of Mental Health and Social Inclusion at UCL Psychiatry.
“We must not assume that anything new is good. We must do the research to know that interventions are doing more good than harm.”
On 3rd Oct 2024 we hosted our first MHSC Incubator webinar, which featured a fantastic talk from Bryn Lloyd-Evans from University College London, a former social worker and now full-time researcher, who presented a comprehensive overview of the evidence for various models of care and support aimed at meeting people’s social needs in the context of mental health.
Bryn spoke about “the stuff of life”: families, relationships, money, housing, work, crime, justice, social isolation, civic participation etc. Despite the recognised importance of social care interventions, there is a notable gap in robust evidence supporting their effectiveness.
“We need to rethink how we’re studying social interventions in mental health”.
It’s not all about RCTs, but randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews with meta-analyses are possible. Bryn reviewed findings from systematic reviews and elsewhere, highlighting models like IPS employment support and Housing First as having strong evidence bases.
His talk concluded with a discussion on the challenges and potential of evidence-based social care, raising critical questions about the future directions for research and implementation in this vital field.
“Evidence-based social care is possible”
Why not grab a cuppa now, and watch Bryn’s 14-min talk in full.
