Marking Turnaround

PROVISIONAL MARKS

PROVISIONAL MARKS
Marking turnaround for assessments is 15 working days from the last possible date of submission. A ‘working day’ is defined as Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays, University vacation periods (e.g. Christmas and Easter) and University examination periods.

Workshop classes take place in different centres, typically over a two-month period. This means that the workshop assessment for the same course will have different deadlines according to the specific workshop students attend. Course Unit Directors release all workshop assessment marks and feedback comments on Canvas at the same time following moderation, meaning marks could be released later than 15 working days after the earliest workshops.

Once provisional marking of an assessment is complete and ready for you to view, you will be informed via an announcement on Canvas and an email. The marks and feedback will be found in the Grades area of Canvas.

Note: Every effort is made to return marked assessments as quickly as possible in order to provide feedback on your progress. The feedback returned in respect of every marked assessment is designed to give an understanding of how various aspects of the work have contributed to the mark awarded. All marks are provisional, at this stage, until they are confirmed by a Progress Board. This is per the University’s Policy on Feedback to Students.

FINAL MARKS

FINAL MARKS
Remember that the initial marks you see on Canvas (15 days following the submission deadline) are “provisional marks” and may be unmoderated. This means that they are subject to change following application of late penalties, review of potential academic malpractice investigations and completion of internal and external moderation processes.

Following the close of each term, however, a Progress Board will take place to review all marks awarded for each course and to benchmark overall marking standards. A sample of assessed work will be moderated in accordance with the University’s regulations, model or expected answers and marking scheme.

Once these processes have been completed, you will receive a further email notification to confirm that your final assessment marks are ready to view on the Self-Service area. Final marks have been ratified by the Progress Board and represent official results for your course(s).

Late Submissions and Penalties

The late submission scheme above sets out to discourage late submission of assessments by enforcing a late penalty and negating any advantage that might be gained if submitted after a point of time when other students have received their marked assessments.

Late submission penalties will be shown in Canvas once they have been checked and confirmed by the Assessment and Progression Team. They will also be shown in Student Records via ‘Self Service’ once marks have been ratified at the Progress Board.

Where a piece of coursework is awarded zero (0%) as a result of the application of the penalty for late submission, the zero (0%) awarded for the assignment will be used when calculating the overall course mark.

Note: Non-submission of coursework (i.e. work which is not submitted within 10 days of the published deadline) will be automatically awarded a mark of zero (0%).

Please notify the Student Support Team as soon as possible if you are unable to submit your assessments; they will be able to advise you of your options. Please read full details of the University’s Policy on Submission of Work for Summative Assessment on Taught Programmes.

Word Limit Penalties

The following penalties can be applied if the stated word limit or time limits set (e.g. assessed videos) is exceeded by at least + 10%:

  • + 10-25%: 10 marks deducted
  • + 25-50%: 20 marks deducted
  • > 50%: zero grade to be applied

These penalties will be applied by the marker and included in the feedback.

What is the late penalty scheme for reassessments?

Any reassessments received after the due date will be zero graded.

What if circumstances arise and I need to postpone an assessment?

If circumstances arise and you have to postpone assessments, please note that marks can only be carried over for two consecutive terms. If you choose to postpone for three or more terms, then you would need to do a full course retake.
