In order to encourage submissions from the full range of disciplines within Modern Languages, the Editors of Xanthos have decided to extend the deadline for submissions to February 1st, 2020.

Xanthos: A Journal of Foreign Literatures and Languages is a double-blind, peer-reviewed academic journal based within the University of Exeter s Department of Modern Languages. Following the success of our inaugural issue, we welcome submissions for our second annual issue, for publication in summer 2020. Modern Languages is a broad and diverse discipline, and makes use of a wide range of methodologies. We invite contributions that draw on (but need not be limited to) literary theory and criticism, comparative literature, reception studies, translation studies, and linguistics. We are particularly interested in submissions that are interdisciplinary in nature,  and which bring Modern Languages research into dialogue with historical, economic, philosophical, and political questions. Xanthos also welcomes translations from foreign languages into English; in particular, we encourage translations of texts that have not previously been published in English, or which are under-appreciated in English-language criticism.

Contributions should be accompanied by a 200-word abstract and a brief biography.

Submissions should be written in English, be between 5,000-8,000 words in length, and follow MHRA style. To view our full author guidelines and editorial policy, or to read our first issue, please visit our website.
