Enhanced Services

What is the purpose of this clinic?

The Enhanced Services clinic operates predominately NHS commissioned extra services that are provided by optometrists who have undergone further professional training, enabling specialist care to be provided within a community setting.

These services typically reduce the waiting time and the distance travelled by patients, in addition to reducing the pressure that hospital eye departments currently experience. Sometimes this will involve making referrals to hospital (secondary care) providers.

Our Enhanced Services clinic offer GERS (glaucoma refinement), Community Urgent Eyecare Services (CUES), and pre- and post-cataract schemes. In addition to this, our Enhanced Services clinic offer private colour vision assessment.

Who can be seen?

NHS Enhanced Services can be accessed by patients who have a UK-registered GP within a commissioned area.

Private colour vision services are available to anyone who has had a full sight test before you can be seen in our clinic.

What happens at appointments?

When you arrive, one of our qualified optometrists, with up to four students in attendance, will have a short discussion with you about your eye issues.

They may ask about:

  • past eye conditions;
  • family history of eye conditions;
  • your general health;
  • any medications.

Once any necessary tests are complete, the findings will be explained to you and suitable recommendations given.

If onward referrals or reports are required then these will be completed by the supervisor and students.

What to bring (or do before) my appointment

Many examinations require the use of eye drops to dilate your pupils, so please ask when booking an appointment if this is likely to be required. Driving is not advised for approximately four hours after pupil dilation, so please ensure that you make alternative travel arrangements where appropriate.

When you come to your appointment, please bring:

  • a copy of any relevant referral/reports if referred for Enhanced Services;
  • a signed copy of your latest (valid) sight test prescription is required for colour vision assessment;
  • any occupational colour vision testing forms (along with a passport/driving license photo ID);
  • a list of your current medicines, including any eye drops you use;
  • your spectacles and contact lens case, if you wear contact lenses when attending your appointment.
