The Janus Kulikowski Award
This award was established to recognise the achievements of Professor Janus Kulikowski, who spent much of his career at The University of Manchester. Each spring, the Manchester Vision Network invites nominations for the award.
The award is open to postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research fellows.
The research output will usually be in the form of a published academic paper, but other equivalent outputs will be considered.
The Award made each year is based on outputs published in the previous calendar year.
How to make a nomination
Nominations for the award can be made by the researcher themselves, or by a colleague on their behalf.
The nomination should include a copy of the paper or other output, plus:
- a short commentary describing the particular contribution of the nominee;
- the reasons for the output being particularly significant;
- where the work fits within the career progression of the nominee.
The winner will be notified in early summer of each year and is required to deliver a keynote lecture at that year’s annual meeting.
The Janus Kulikowski Research Award 2026
The Manchester Vision Network is pleased to welcome nominations for the annual award for the most outstanding research output from a researcher working within the Network.
The award of £250 is open to postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers and research fellows. The research output will usually be in the form of a published academic paper, but other equivalent outputs will be considered. The Award made in 2026 will be for outputs published in the 2025 calendar year.

The winner will be notified by 19 June 2026, and will be required to deliver a keynote lecture at the MVN Annual Meeting on 15 July 2026.
About Professor Janus Kulikowski
The annual award is named in honour of Professor Janus Kulikowski. Primarily, Janus was an engineer and an accomplished mathematician. His early work in Warsaw was concerned with studying time and frequency distributions of the Earth’s gravitation. He later used mathematical modelling, neurophysiology, and psychophysics to understand how the retina processes spatial, temporal and chromatic stimuli.
He was an internationally renowned vision scientist who spent much of his career working in Manchester, beginning in what was then the Department of Ophthalmic Optics at UMIST, and continuing his research activity (despite his ‘retirement’ in 2002) in the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry until his death in 2023. He published more than 250 papers, 17 of which have over 100 citations and, in total, have accumulated over 7,000 citations.
Janus had a fulfilled life and brought scientific insight and the enjoyment of science to a large number of colleagues in the visual science community. His principles of rigorous experimental work and strong theoretical underpinning of ideas continue in Manchester to this day.
