Manchester Vision Network 2022 Research Showcase
Bridging the gap between basic and clinical research
We are pleased to announce the fifth staging of this annual event that provides a multidisciplinary forum for clinicians (including ophthalmologists, optometrists, orthoptists and specialist nurses), researchers and technology developers interested in ophthalmic and vision science.
Our main aim is to stimulate individuals from different fields to exchange ideas and potentially establish fruitful collaborations. During the event, there will be ample opportunities for interaction among attendees.
Abstracts are welcomed on all topics in the realm of ophthalmic and vision research ranging from experimental studies in cellular, animal and computational models to clinical research in humans.
Particular interest will be devoted to novel techniques that can be applied in both basic and translational research (such as AI applications, imaging techniques, large-scale genomic studies).
After assessment by the scientific programme committee, abstracts will be selected for oral or poster presentations.
Location
The event will take place on 13 July 2022 in the Zochonis Building, Lecture Theatre B.
Breaks, food and poster sessions will be located in the Zochonis Hub.

How to submit your abstract
Abstracts should be submitted as Word documents attached to an email to Riccardo Storchi (riccardo.storchi@manchester.ac.uk). Please use the subject line ‘MVN abstract submission’.
You may submit more than one abstract and you can select your preference for a poster or oral presentation. The final decision on mode of presentation will be made by the scientific programme committee.
There will be prizes of £100 for both the best oral presentation and the best poster presentation at the meeting. Please consider the multidisciplinary nature of the audience to ensure that your abstract and oral or poster presentation is accessible to everyone.
Please follow the instructions below to ensure that your abstract is submitted correctly. All submissions should include:
- abstract title – limited to 20 words;
- the names of the authors, with the presenting author indicated;
- a brief affiliation of each author.
The text of each abstract is limited to a total of 250 words and should include the following sections.
- Background
- Methods
- Results
- Significance
- A figure illustrating the main findings (optional)
Oral presentations will be scheduled as 8 minutes for the presentation, and 2 minutes for discussion.
Poster presentations will be in A0 portrait format.
Janus Kulikowski Award 2022
About Professor Janus Kulikowski
The annual award is named in honour of Professor Janus Kulikowski, an internationally renowned vision scientist who spent much of his career working in Manchester, beginning in what was then the Department of Ophthalmic Optics at UMIST, through to his continuing research activity, despite his ‘retirement’ in 2002, in the Division of Pharmacy and Optometry.Professor Kulikowski helped to put Manchester Vision Sciences on the world stage. He is most famous for contributing to the understanding of how the brain analyses spatial information. He used animal models, human electrophysiology, and psychophysics to explain how the retina packages visual information for analysis by different regions of the visual brain.He has published more than 250 papers, 17 of which have over 100 citations and in total have accumulated over 7,000 citations.Learn more about Professor Kulikowski:
