Busting Healthcare Research Myths

To celebrate Healthcare Science Week 2020, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust debunked five common myths about working in mental health and dementia research.

Dr Laura Parkes, Manchester Neuroimaging Lead and PI for Sensing and Imaging for the Diagnosis of Dementia, contributed to debunking the myth that “Healthcare research only happens in a laboratory”. Here’s what she had to say:

“We use the MRI scanner as our ‘lab’. It is essentially a very powerful computer that we can program to take new kinds of pictures of the brain. The MRI signal comes from water in the brain and we have invented a new measurement that tracks the leakage of water out of the smallest blood vessels in the brain. In our ‘SIDD’ project (sensing and imaging for early diagnosis of dementia) we are testing whether this is altered in people with the early signs of dementia.”
