Manchester Fungal Infection Group (MFIG) were pleased to be part of the University of Manchester’s 200-year anniversary celebrations. One of the highlights of this bicentennial event was the Community Festival, that took place on campus on Saturday 8 June.

MFIG were there to highlight the issue of rising numbers of deaths attributed to fungal infections and the danger of increasing anti-fungal resistance. To do this we designed a range of educational and fun activities that we used to open conversations about our research.

This event was a great opportunity to have conversations with members of the public of all ages and get them thinking about the danger of fungal infections. We had microscopes so people could see fungal infection in tissue, cultivated plates of common fungal infections, quizzes, a fungal ‘shopping basket’ and a make-your-own fungus stand.

Working at the festival was incredibly rewarding. It allowed us to introduce new audiences to the complex world of fungal research and the work we are doing to combat these infections.

“It was great fun and I found it really rewarding to connect with the public. I enjoyed talking to a variety of people to raise awareness of both the threat of fungal infections and the benefits that fungi provide.”

Nathan, volunteer, Infection Biology MSc student

“Understanding public perception of AMR problems gives us insights on how best to increase AMR awareness. Additionally, the public outreach itself is a good opportunity to improve my public speaking and it was a really fulfilling experience.”

Luthvia, volunteer, MFIG postgraduate

The festival brought scientific research to the public, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the challenges and advancements in fungal infection treatment.

By merging scientific research with public engagement, the festival made a complex topic accessible and engaging.
