Dr Mike Bottery awarded a Wellcome Trust Career Development Award
I’m excited to share that I’ve been awarded a Wellcome Trust Career Development Award to address the remarkable evolutionary adaptability of the human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus.
Serious fungal infections pose a unique challenge to human health, causing severe and life-threatening disease. Antifungal medications are essential for the treatment of fungal disease, but resistance is rapidly emerging across the globe. This is particularly concerning for A. fumigatus, which is responsible for more deaths than any other fungal pathogen. Understanding the factors driving the remarkable adaptability of A. fumigatus is essential for developing effective strategies to mitigate the risk of resistance emergence.
Through the fellowship, I will establish my lab group to investigate how mutation, horizontal gene transfer and sexual reproduction each contribute to the adaptability of A. fumigatus. By unravelling the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors that shape A. fumigatus evolution, this research will provide critical information needed to combat the growing threat of drug-resistant fungal infections.
Many thanks to the Wellcome Trust for giving me this opportunity to establish my lab; I am excited to continue my research journey in fungal evolution.
