Meet the PhD student: Laura Alguacil Cuellar
Hola! I am Laura, a PhD candidate at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Madrid, Spain. I completed a degree in Biology, followed by a Master’s in Microbiology and Parasitology. My previous experience includes working in hospital Mycology services and serving as a research assistant in the Functional Genomics of Yeasts Group at the University.
My PhD, supervised by Dr. Ana Alastruey Izquierdo, focuses on fungal infections caused by both molds and yeasts, approached from a One Health perspective. My work involves analysing fungal samples from environmental sources, human colonisers, and strains responsible for invasive fungal infections, with the aim of elucidating potential transmission pathways and gaining a deeper understanding of the factors driving antifungal resistance.
I joined Michael Bromley’s group for a short research stay, during which I learned and applied knowledge related to antifungal resistance from a more basic research perspective.
