Forests are at the centre of struggles for resources, climate mitigation, conservation, restoration, and economic development.

Researchers from The University of Manchester’s Global Development Institute are working closely with international partners to understand how to best balance multiple needs in forest landscapes.

Two independent but overlapping research programmes are driving forward our understanding of forests landscapes:

Sustainable Forest Transitions (SFT)

By combining socioeconomic and environmental geospatial data, Sustainable Forest Transitions is examining the environmental and socioeconomic effects of reforestation drivers, with the aim of identifying a win-win approaches for people and the planet.

SFT was selected by the European Research Council and is funded by UK Research and Innovation.

Observatory for Forests and Just Transitions

The Observatory is conducting a large multi-site comparative study on if, how, and under what conditions land rights reduce inequalities experienced by forest communities affected by decarbonisation processes, such as mining for transition minerals and carbon capture and storage.

The Observatory is funded by the Ford Foundation.
