Residential Research Programme at the British School at Rome November 4th- 9th 2019

We are seeking expressions of interest from PhD students from the North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP) institutions to spend 5 days on a residential visit to the British School at Rome in November (http://www.bsr.ac.uk/).

The BSR is situated in the Valle Giulia on the site of the 1911 British Pavilion. The Pavilion was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and then adapted by him to become the home of the British School at Rome.

The BSR is one of the most prestigious research academies in Rome. For over 100 years world-class researchers of the art, history and culture of the western Mediterranean and the best contemporary artists in the Commonwealth have been nurtured here. The BSR sees itself as the bridge between the intellectual and cultural heart of Rome and Italy, and creative and academic researchers from Britain and the Commonwealth. BSR residents have access to the Library 24/7 during their residency. The 16 desks in the Garden Rooms are reserved exclusively for residents and also for visiting BSR Members, BSR Research Fellows and Honorary Fellows. Residents are welcome to borrow books from the Library to use in their rooms.

Spending time at the BSR offers the most incredible enhancement to research, in any field. It is not necessary to be researching Archaeology, Art or Architecture – all areas of research are of relevance because of the unique breadth of Roman history that covers every aspect that can be conceptualised!

Return flights, accommodation and subsistence whilst at in Rome will be covered by the Consortium along with visits to specialised sites of interest related to the workshop in Rome.

We want your Expression of Interest to explain how the residential can support your research and so that we can work with you on the planning and delivery of a programme, tailor made to your needs and interests. We can only offer 6 places.

If you are interested in taking part of the programme please email nwcdtp@manchester.ac.uk with the subject BSR by 1st May 2019. Please indicate how you think the residential could be beneficial to your research in a small paragraph. We will be aiming to meet up with interested students to finalise the programme next month.

Any questions please do not hesitate to contact me
