On 12 December we will be watching Morphine (Morfiy), a 2008 Russian drama directed by Aleksey Balabanov, with English subtitles. The film is based on semi-autobiographical short stories by Mikhail Bulgakov. The screening will be followed by a wine reception and discussion club.

Plot: The film takes place in 1917 during the events of the October Revolution and the beginning of the Russian Civil War. Mikhail Polyakov, who has recently graduated from medical school, arrives at a remote village to work as a doctor. He is the only doctor in the rural area and works hard supported by his small staff of one paramedic and two nurses. After an allergic reaction to a diphtheria
vaccination, he gets a shot of morphine to negate the effects. Gradually it becomes an addiction.

Runtime: 107 min.

You will:

  • see a lot of muzhiks.
  • enjoy visiting Uglich and Kalyazin, historic provincial towns where the shooting of the filmtook place.
  • see a movie with an unusual ending by one of the most highly acclaimed contemporary Russian film directors
