About us

The Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health has been a pioneer in the field of Occupational Health for over 60 years. As the first-ever Occupational Medicine department in the world, we have established a global reputation for excellence. Our expertise lies in cutting-edge research, development, and education in Occupational Health, Occupational Medicine, and Occupational Hygiene.

We are proud to collaborate with the UK government’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) as our key partner. Together, we provide research and monitoring services through our renowned Thomas Ashton Institute for Risk and Regulatory Research. Additionally, we have formed valuable research partnerships with prestigious universities across the UK, as well as with government and professional bodies in occupational health throughout Europe. Through our research activities, such as the Occupational Research (THOR) network, we are constantly discovering new insights into hazardous substances, workplace exposure, and emerging threats. This knowledge enables us to shape future policies and regulatory practices.

Located in a city renowned for its progressive thinking on work and health, we carry forward the traditions of inclusive research and teaching. We support our students’ career paths by fostering strong ties with professional bodies such as the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and the British Occupational Hygiene Society.
