My Accommodation in Manchester: Finding the Right Place for My Life

Choosing where to live is one of the most important decisions when starting my studies at the University of Manchester. During my time here, I’ve experienced two very different types of accommodation: student accommodation and a shared apartment with a friend. Along the way, I’ve also learned a lot about university-provided accommodation. Each option offers something unique, and the best choice really depends on what you’re looking for.

1. Student Accommodation (Ensuite Living)
When I first arrived in Manchester, I chose to live in student accommodation with an ensuite room with four high school friends, provided by an external organisation. This felt like the easiest transition into university life. Because I was living with people I already knew, I felt more at home, safe, and included. In terms of facilities, everything was designed for students; for example, bills were included, maintenance was straightforward, and there were shared facilities such as study rooms and social spaces.
Having my own bathroom gave me a sense of privacy and comfort, and the shared kitchen allowed me to cook with others and share different cuisines. The location was also very convenient, with easy access to campus and nearby supermarkets, cafes, and restaurants. It was a lively and social environment, which also made it easier to meet new people in the first few months.

2. Sharing an Apartment (2B2B with a Friend)
After my first year, I moved into a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom apartment with a friend. This experience was quite different, and it felt more independent and closer to “real life.” We had more space, including a proper living room and kitchen, which allowed us to cook, relax, and host friends.
The surrounding area was quieter and less student-focused, which I personally enjoyed. There were still plenty of things to do nearby, such as local restaurants, gyms, and parks, but it offered a better balance between study and daily life.
However, this option also came with more responsibility. We had to manage bills, communicate with the landlord, and deal with any issues ourselves. While it required more effort, it also helped me develop independence and practical life skills.
Based on my experience, the price of a 2B2B apartment (including bills) and student accommodation is quite comparable in Manchester.

3. University-Provided Accommodation
For many students, especially in their first year, university accommodation is a great option. It is usually located close to campus and comes with strong support systems, which can be very reassuring when moving to a new city.
Areas like Fallowfield and Whitworth are particularly popular among University of Manchester students. They offer a vibrant student community with lots of social events, cafes, and places to explore. It’s a great way to quickly make friends and feel part of university life.

There isn’t a single “best” accommodation choice, and each option suits different needs. If you value convenience and a social environment, student accommodation is a great starting point. If you prefer more independence, a shared apartment can offer a more flexible and personal living experience.
Personally, I’m glad I experienced both. Starting in student accommodation helped me settle in, while moving into an apartment later allowed me to grow more independent. Together, these experiences made my time in Manchester both comfortable and rewarding.
