Starting university is definitely an exciting, yet overwhelming experience. The idea of new friends, independence, and academic challenges can be both thrilling and nerve-wracking. As I embarked on this transformative journey, I found settling into university life a challenging process, but one that ultimately shaped me in ways I never expected.

While many students experience the thrill of relocating to a new city for their university education, my experience was somewhat different. Manchester is my home city so I wasn’t venturing into entirely unfamiliar territory. You would think that being in my home city made the settling-in process easier, but in my case, it brought its own set of challenges. I had grown up in Manchester, but suddenly, it was as if I was discovering an entirely different side of the city. The campus became my new environment, and I was surrounded by new faces and opportunities.

Freshers’ week was a whirlwind of activities and introductions. It was a great opportunity to meet new people and get involved with the university! There were so many clubs and societies to choose from. Although this was quite overwhelming at first, it set up the perfect way for forging new friendships.

During my first month, I attended as many events and clubs that piqued my interest and I made tons of friends. I discovered amazing societies such as the Dance Society and ArabSoc! Getting involved in these societies allowed me to find like-minded people who became some of my closest friends! There were even a few clubs that in hindsight, I wonder why I even tried but I am so glad I did. Going to as many university events as possible allowed me to expand my social network and just have a sense of belonging. I think it’s really easy to go to university and become quite lonely. That’s why it’s important to get involved and get out there! Meeting new people showed me how everyone is in the same position of just wanting to make friends at university so don’t be anxious and go for it.

As time went on the initial excitement disappeared and reality set in. Balancing coursework, assignments, and exams became a challenge. I soon discovered that staying organised and having a structured routine made a world of difference. I created a study schedule and spent my time in the Alan Gilbert learning commons to focus and get all my work done. By doing so, I was able to manage my coursework efficiently and still have a social life.

Settling into university life is an exciting yet overwhelming experience. However, the journey is incredibly rewarding, providing opportunities for personal growth, self-discovery, and lasting friendships. With time, patience, and a willingness to embrace the new experiences that come your way, university life can become a transformative and enriching chapter in your life. As I reflect on my own journey, I can’t help but appreciate the profound impact that university life has had on me, shaping me into the person I am today.
