My year in Singapore: Top tips for moving abroad

Studying abroad as a university student is like stepping into a new world for a full year!

It is not just about classes and exams; it is about immersing yourself in a different culture, making friends from around the globe, and discovering facets of yourself you never knew existed.

Firstly, researching your destinations is key. You should be very excited about where you are going abroad, so make sure to make plans for what museums, beaches, and cafes you want to visit. It is easy to want to stay in, you may feel homesick, or nervous about being abroad, but having plans and making an effort to explore the city is motivational. Your research should also be about what your daily life will look like. This could include researching public transport, closest supermarkets and shopping areas, and anything that could help you get a head start on familiarizing yourself with your new surroundings

Overall, the more you know the better prepared and more comfortable you will be once you arrive. Quick tip: get a sim card once you arrive, it takes the pressure off wasting data and you will be able to use your phone comfortably. Additionally, download necessary apps beforehand as some countries use different apps for public transport and maps so you will need to have your phone handy.

Now, let’s talk money. Finances are a real thing, and budgeting is very important. Some of the destinations may be more expensive than others, so it is important to organize yourself before moving halfway across the world. I opted to make a digital bank account on Revolut to easily be able to receive money from my parents at home without incurring heavy international transaction fees. This has also allowed me to pay using my digital card without incurring fees. Furthermore, arriving with and having cash with you is important as certain services or establishments may only accept cash. I encountered this when paying a visa to China, in Singapore, where the embassy only accepted payment in cash.

Trips! Reading week and weekends are the best times to take trips around the world! During my time in Singapore, I have made effort to make plans, travel, and explore as many neighbouring countries as possible. Planning is the key, and you can find great student friendly deals if you book in advance. Regardless, as you meet people from your courses you will definitely make spontaneous plans to travel together. Connecting with other students has been one of the highlights of being abroad. Take the time to attend university events and mixers so you make friends early on. Although other students may only stay for a semester it is worth getting to meet everyone and make friends from all parts of the world. Also do not forget staying connected with your friends and family at home is important. Video call and message your friends if you are feeling homesick. And when things get tough, there’s no shame in reaching out to the university’s support system!

Being abroad is an irreplaceable experience, so take your time and enjoy!
