How to Manage Stress During the Exam Period?

As exams and assignment deadlines approach, it’s completely normal to feel a bit (or even a lot) stressed out. The pressure can really get to you, making it feel like there’s not enough time to get everything done and leaving you anxious about whether you will succeed. But don’t worry—you’re not alone in this! We’ve all been there, and there are plenty of ways to manage your exam stress so you can achieve your best results. Here are my top tips on how to stay calm and collected during these busy times, so you can perform at your best and maintain your well-being.

First things first, a little planning can go a long way. Grab a planner or use an app to map out all your tasks and deadlines. Breaking things down into smaller, manageable chunks can make a huge difference. Prioritise what needs to be done first and try to tackle a little bit each day instead of leaving everything until the last minute. Managing your time effectively is KEY! By planning ahead and managing your time well, you’ll feel more in control and less stressed, allowing you to approach your exams and assignments with confidence.

Taking care of your social life and health is crucial if you want to succeed. It’s not just about planning and revising all day, every day; taking breaks is essential too. Step away from your studying now and then to relax and recharge. Make time to catch up with friends and family and do something you enjoy. Finding that balance between study time and fun keeps you motivated and on track.

Now, let’s talk about your physical well-being. You’ve got to be getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night! I know, I know, you’ve heard this one before but it’s because it’s so true. All-nighters might seem like a good idea, but trust me, they’ll do more harm than good. Your brain needs to rest, so please say goodbye to those late-night cram sessions and create a bedtime routine that helps you unwind. By taking care of your mental and physical wellbeing you will be 1000x less stressed during the exam period.

Lastly, utilise all the resources at your disposal! The University of Manchester is packed with tutors and support staff who are eager to help you succeed. Whether you need help understanding course material, guidance on assignments, or simply someone to chat with about university life, these tutors are there for YOU. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them during their office hours or schedule an appointment for a one-on-one session. During my undergraduate dissertation, I pretty much spoke to my tutor daily. I had SOOOO many questions and he was always around to help. So please remember you’re not alone in this journey, and the university wants you to succeed!

Navigating the stress of exams and assignments can be tough but with the right strategies, you can maintain balance and even enjoy the journey. You’ve got this! Good luck.
