My International Student Experience!
Being an international student means embarking on a journey towards a new life characterised by self-discovery, exploration, and adventures in an unknown city with a culture and way of life different to the one we are used to. Today, I would like to tell you a bit about what this journey has been like for me as a Latin American studying in Manchester!
Building a Routine, University and Studies
As a BSc Education student, I have about six to eight hours of lectures and/or seminars every week. These usually take place at different times and days, which means that building a routine is a task I take very seriously to maintain a balanced lifestyle and boost my productivity.
On a regular day, I have breakfast and go to the gym first thing in the morning. Finding accessible gyms near campus is quite easy as most of them offer student discounts and there are some in close proximity to the university, the city centre, and student halls. After preparing myself for the day I will do lecture or seminar prep, attend lessons, and/or spend some time with my friends on campus depending on my timetable and workload.
In addition to my studies and assessments, I also engage in casual part-time work opportunities to which I dedicate a few hours every week and extracurricular activities such as Peer Support, to build my CV and obtain the Stellify Award upon graduating.
Socials and Friends
The university’s Students Union offers over 400 societies which any student can join! This is an exciting prospect to meet new people from a wide range of backgrounds and different courses. However, I have made most of my friends in my course as we share lots of common interests, passions, and aspirations.
Investing time in nurturing these relationships has been key to my international student experience as it has allowed me to build my little family away from home. It provides me with a support system if I ever face any challenges or hardships along the way.
Exploring Manchester
One of the best things about being in Manchester is the many things it has to offer. You can visit lots of museums such as the Manchester Museum on campus, the Imperial War Museum, the Science and Industry Museum, and many others, which teach us about the history of the city and the many developments that took place in it, like the world’s first stored-program computer!
There are also quite a few art galleries such as the Manchester Art Gallery and The Whitworth which are free to enter, as well as a lively environment for sports lovers, with the Etihad Stadium and Old Trafford being landmarks of the city.
It’s Your Turn!
Taking on this journey as an international student has been an extraordinary personal growth and development experience. I hope that what I have shared with you is useful and enhances your experience as you embark on your own journey as a student at The University of Manchester!
