Things I Wish I Knew at the Beginning of My MSc Marketing Course

Just a few days ago, I gave my final presentation for my dissertation to one of the biggest FMCG companies, Proctor & Gamble. Standing there, presenting my research, I realized it was all over so soon. Choosing to peruse an MSc in Marketing or any course at The University of Manchester is influence bt the vibrant and diverse city of Manchester. The allure of the Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) and the vast array of 400 societies at the University made it an irresistible choice. However, there were several things I wish I had known at the beginning of my journey. which I believe would have made my experience even more enriching.

1. Balancing Theory with Practical Experience

One of my initial fears was that the course might be overly theoretical, leaving little room for practical application. While the curriculum is indeed rigorous, I quickly learned that it is crucial to seek out and engage in opportunities that provide practical experience. Whether it’s through part-time work, internships, or participating in business events at AMBS, these experiences complement the theoretical knowledge gained in class and provide valuable real-world insights.

2. Navigating Group Projects

Group projects were a significant challenge, especially in the first semester when I didn’t know anyone. Collaborating with new people while juggling a busy schedule was daunting. However, these projects taught me the important of teamwork and communication. Building strong relationships with your group members and being open about your availability and workload can make a significant difference. By the second semester, you will find a rhythm and will learn to balance group work and individual assignments more effectively.

3. Utilizing University Resources

The support systems at AMBS are incredible and are a lifeline during your studies. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the AMBS handbook. It is a valuable resource that contains all the information you will need for any queries about academic appeals or attendance. If you can’t find the answers there, you can always visit the AMBS Hub for assistance. The AMBS Hub was always responsive, and I appreciated the quick email replies and the kindness of staff. Moreover, utilize the study rooms and libraries on campus, which I admittedly did not do until my dissertation. These spaces offer a conducive environment for focused study sessions. I highly recommend making full use of these resources from the start.

4. Balancing Academic and Personal Life

Balancing academic responsibilities with personal life was challenging but essential. I relied heavily on my calendar and planner to keep track of deadlines and commitments. It’s important to communication and set expectations with your peers to maintain a healthy balance.

5. Memorable Experiences

Apply to student ambassador opportunities and student representative roles early, as many students apply and not all get selected. These are fantastic part-time opportunities that keep you close to school activities and allow you to earn a bit on the side whilst studying. One of my most memorable experiences was becoming a student representative for the MSc Marketing program. It was an honor to be introduced by our program director to the class.

6. Advice for Incoming Students

For incoming students, my advice is to embrace every moment. Manchester is a lively city with endless opportunities’, but its also known for the its rainy weather – so always carry an umbrella! Take the time to explore the beautiful surroundings in Wales and Scotland. Start applying for part-time jobs and graduate schemes early and make fill use of the Careers Service at UoM. The course will be demanding, but the year will fly by, and you’ll come out with not only a degree but also unforgettable experiences and friendships.

The MSc Marketing course at The University of Manchester has equipped me with a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of marketing. Reflecting on my journey, these are the insights and lessons I wish I had known at the beginning of my course. I hope they provide some guidance and encouragement to those embarking on this exciting path.
