Discovering Your Passions: The Benefits of a BA Liberal Arts Degree at Manchester University
Coming from the International Baccalaureate at college, in which I studied a variety of subjects, I struggled to narrow my learning to just one subject at university. Choosing Liberal Arts allowed me to continue widening my breadth of knowledge across a variety of subjects and engage with many different disciplines that I find interesting.
When looking at different universities, I was particularly excited by the Liberal Arts course at Manchester as in contrast to other universities that offer this course as Manchester allows you to study a range of different disciplines with no requirement to study one subject more than any others you wish to choose. Most other Liberal Arts courses will require you to choose a ‘major’ subject meaning you pick one subject that will you mainly study, and you study some other modules alongside that. As I choose Liberal Arts because I wanted flexibility and the choice to change and explore lots of different topics, Manchester seemed like the perfect fit for me. However, if you do want to mainly study one subject you also have the freedom to do that on this course as well.
My highlight of Liberal Arts so far has been the freedom to choose whatever modules I find interesting from a vast range of disciplines across the University. I love that every module I study feels so tailored to my interests and what I am passionate about! I have also enjoyed meeting likeminded people who share the same interest in interdisciplinary learning as me and it has been insightful to engage in conversations about the different topics they are enjoying as well.
For me, I love living in Manchester because it’s such a social and exciting city! It has an amazing music scene- there is always an event or gig happening, with very a vibrant nightlife. I also love how culturally diverse and inclusive this city feels, with areas such as gay village creating a welcoming atmosphere for people regardless of their identity. It is also a great place to study with many different libraries to choose from as well as lots of cosy coffee shops that create a relaxing study environment.
I play football and netball through societies which has been a great way of making friends and going to fun socials. I also do some writing and editing work for the PPE press which is a student led journal that has allowed me to gain some journalism experience, which I’m interested in as a career prospect, as well as given me an outlet to write creatively.
I think this degree has given me a breath of knowledge and a wide variety of skills that will be invaluable in a working environment such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity as well as increasing my cultural awareness and empathy towards differing perspectives. Currently, I am looking into master’s programmes as I have loved learning on my degree and want to further my academic studies.
