Outside the Lecture Hall – What We Get Up to in MUGS
MUGS (Manchester University Geographical Society) is proud to be the oldest society at The University of Manchester, and with good reason – it brings together a vibrant community of geographers from all corners of the discipline. Whether you’re interested in human or physical geography, and whether you’re just starting out in first year or heading into your final year, MUGS is a welcoming and dynamic space for anyone with a passion for the world around them. While many of our members are Geography students, our events are open to all, and we love welcoming people from different courses who share an interest in the subject. From academic inspiration to social adventures, here’s a glimpse into what life at MUGS is all about.
Our regular social events are at the heart of what we do, bringing people together outside of lectures to relax, make friends, and have fun. These events are a great way to get to know course mates and students from other years in a laid-back setting. From classic pub golf nights and creative mug painting sessions, to refreshing hikes through the stunning landscapes of the Peak District, our socials cater to every kind of personality. We also love collaborating with other societies, most recently, the Birdwatching Society joined us for a nature walk, and we often team up with other university geography societies too, such as the University of Leeds, for joint events and trips. Of course, the highlight of our social calendar is our annual end-of-year formal, cleverly named Globall. This event is the perfect excuse to dress up and celebrate the year in style with a three-course dinner, great music, and even better company.
Beyond the socials, MUGS is also committed to academic enrichment. We host a variety of talks, panels, and guest lectures throughout the year, offering fresh perspectives that go beyond the lecture theatre. Recently, we hosted a panel on Women in Consulting, which offered insight into career paths that geographers may not always consider. We also welcome alumni back to the university to share their experiences, provide guidance, and give practical advice on employment and postgraduate opportunities. These events aim to empower students and help them make more informed decisions about their futures, blending academic knowledge with real-world relevance.
Being geographers, community and sustainability are central values we hold dear. MUGS encourages members to get involved in volunteering initiatives that give back to the environment. A great example is our collaboration with the Tree Musketeers, an organisation that runs weekly conservation sessions. Activities have included planting sphagnum moss in degraded areas of the Peak District, helping with pond maintenance in local nature reserves, and supporting wider biodiversity efforts across Greater Manchester.
And it’s not just about the mind, we get moving too! MUGS has its very own sports teams in netball, football, and hockey. These teams train regularly and compete in inter-society matches throughout the academic year. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just fancy getting involved for fun and fitness, joining a MUGS sports team is a brilliant way to stay active, meet new people, and be part of a spirited and supportive group.
In short, MUGS isn’t just about geography, it’s about meeting new people, trying new things, and making the most of your time at uni. From chilled socials to inspiring talks and getting stuck into sports or volunteering, there’s always something going on. We’d love to have you join us!
