Plans over the summer

The UK’s long-awaited summer is here, as it is often romanticised for travel, relaxation and spending time with loved ones. While everyone else seems to be planning their vacation, my plans are… a bit different. And I have two things to do over summer. One is getting my dissertation done and the second thing is figuring out the next steps for my career path.

Dissertation Mode: ON

I’ve selected a topic I’m deeply passionate about, which paves the way for my future career. To be honest, writing a dissertation is a whole new experience for me. So, on certain days, I feel like I’ve got everything under control, such as updating my draft with the adjustments my supervisor suggested and demonstrating my progress to him. But on other days, I open my laptop, look at the blinking cursor with a hot cup of coffee in hand and wonder how I’ve made it this far.

To stay organized and monitor my work, I set loose deadlines using a Gantt chart. Additionally, I spend my mornings writing and conducting research in comfy study spaces like Alan Gilbert Learning Commons (AGLC) and the Stopford Building library where the vibrant environment helped me concentrate on my work and keep my energy levels high. I spend my afternoons revising manuscripts and meeting with my academic supervisor, whose advice and criticism have been really helpful. I am keeping my hopes up to get my first draft done by the first week of August.

Exploring my career path

I am pretty sure that I am not alone in feeling somewhat torn between “almost done with university” and “what now?”. But I’ve made appointments with the university’s careers service to polish my resume and look for greater prospects in my domain.

I’m trying not to worry too much about everything. But I’m keeping a check on tiny tasks that can make a great impact, like getting my resume done, enhancing my LinkedIn, seeking insights from industry professionals through networking events, and looking for job prospects.

Balancing work with personal growth

Despite the workload, I’m determined to keep my summer balanced with bit of fun whenever time permits. For instance, I am one of the trip leaders of the International Society, who plan day trips throughout the UK so that students may learn about the rich history and culture of the nation. I was recently assigned a trip to Cambridge, which was a great experience for me. A perfect weekend gateway from my dissertation work. I’m also expanding my skill set by taking new certification courses. At home, I’ve been enjoying volunteering at Parklife 2025 and Oasis, two of Manchester’s summer music festivals.

Counting the days until…

My time at university and my future are connected this summer. By staying focused on my dissertation, exploring career paths, and embracing personal growth, I’m aiming for a productive and meaningful season. To all the blog readers, whether you’re embarking on your university journey or are about to graduate, here’s my key message to everyone: set goals, stay connected, and let every moment shape your path. Cheers to a summer filled with learning and exploration!
