“The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.”

As I take a moment to reflect on my journey over the past year at The University of Manchester, I’m truly amazed at how quickly time has passed. It feels like just yesterday I was getting off the plane, filled with a mix of excitement and nerves, ready to start a new chapter. Now, looking back, I’m thankful for the memories, lessons, and friendships I’ve gained, from adjusting to academic life in the UK to finding a sense of belonging far from home.

My name is Olivia, and I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Management and Information Systems: Change and Development. I come from Southeast Asia and travelled over 18 hours to study in Manchester, a journey I feel very grateful for. At first, I was worried about returning to academic life after working for six years. But thanks to the support of my lecturers and classmates, I found the learning experience not only manageable but truly exciting.

One thing I truly value about this program is its broad and meaningful perspective. It goes beyond just studying management or information systems — it explores how digital systems can contribute to national development and enhance people’s lives. My mindset has shifted from focusing solely on strengthening a company or organization to considering how systems can transform entire communities or even nations.

A highlight of this year was the field trip to Cape Town, South Africa, where we visited several inspiring organisations. It was during this trip that I not only made wonderful new friends, but also witnessed firsthand how systems thinking can bring real, positive change to society. For me, work is no longer just about personal success, it’s about how I can contribute to making the world a better place.

Manchester itself has a special charm. I’ve travelled to other cities across the UK, but Manchester remains my favourite. It’s not just because I study here, but also because of its vibrant people, its famously unpredictable (and mostly rainy!) weather, and its unique character.

Outside of class, I enjoy joining the UoM badminton community, which has been a great way to unwind and meet new people. The university also offers excellent career planning resources, and I’m currently working part-time with UoM. From the beginning, my goal wasn’t just academic achievement; I also wanted to develop my social skills, and this part-time role has helped me grow in that area.

Looking ahead, I plan to return to my home country and continue my career there. Some of my friends are exploring job opportunities in the UK, while others are preparing to return home as well. Whatever path we take, I believe the experiences we’ve gained at The University of Manchester will shape and guide us in our future careers.

For anyone who is about to start their journey at UoM, don’t worry too much. You’re in control, believe in yourself, and everything will fall into place. I’m sure you’ll create unforgettable memories, filled with joy, growth, and maybe even a few emotional moments. Studying here has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my life, and I hope it will be the same for you.
