My Journey To Study BSc Educational Psychology At The University of Manchester

“You’re Meant to Be Here.”

That’s what one of the LED signs on campus says. I remember walking past it one evening and feeling an instant spark of recognition: this was where I was meant to be. Now, as a third-year student studying BSc Educational Psychology at the University of Manchester, I can say that, looking back, these past few years have been full of discovery, challenge, and growth both academically and personally.

From Foundation to Manchester

Before joining UoM, I completed a Foundation Year at INTO Manchester. If you’re currently in your foundation year, I can reassure you that even if some of your courses don’t seem directly related to your future major, the skills you’re developing, such as critical thinking and academic writing, are all highly transferable. They’ll give you a solid start for university life. And trust me, life at UoM is something to look forward to. Its more independent, full of exploration, and a chance to discover who you are and reach your full potential.

Studying BSc Educational Psychology

Our programme is relatively small, around fifty students per year, which makes it much easier to connect with classmates and lecturers. What I love most is how interactive and approachable the learning feels. My favourite module is The Brain Goes to School, which links neuroscience to real classroom practice through small in-class experiments. We also take part in placements each year, where we explore and apply psychology in real educational settings. These practical opportunities have made me more confident in what I’m learning and its relevance to the real world.

This year, we had the chance to design and deliver a small classroom intervention for a local primary school, an experience that was both challenging and inspiring. In addition to classes and placements, during the semesters we also meet guest speakers such as educational psychologists and counsellors who share their daily work, helping us better imagine possible career paths. Honestly, when I first started my studies, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do in the future. But this course has opened so many doors and built my confidence. So, if you’re passionate about both psychology and education, this programme is the perfect blend of the two.

Life at the University and in Manchester

UoM offers plenty of accessible resources, and my favourite is the Volunteering Hub, where you can find opportunities across a wide range of fields. I think that is also what makes Manchester special: its diversity and sense of community. No matter who you are, you’ll find a place to belong.

For me, I’ve worked as a Letter Ambassador, Mentor, and Youth Worker, supporting young people and contributing to the community. These experiences have boosted my confidence and helped me become a better version of myself. Outside academics, I’ve joined different societies, socialising and making international friends through the International Society, and taking part in friendly competitions with other universities across the UK through the Business Negotiation Society. These experiences encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and discover new possibilities. Beyond campus, the city is alive too, creative, welcoming, and full of things to explore. From candlelight concerts and theatres to football games, there’s always something happening.

Here Is Where It All Begins

When I first arrived, I wasn’t sure if I’d made the right choice. But UoM gave me the platform to explore, learn, and grow. I’m so glad I chose to study here. We never know which path is “right” until we walk it. But maybe your path is leading you here too — to where you’re meant to be.
