My journey to study a PGCE at the University of Manchester
Why I Chose to Study a PGCE
Throughout my life, education has always been a safe place within which I have developed my personal interests, life goals and self-confidence. Having the privilege and ability to explore everything that interested me along the way, led me to develop a strong sense of self and enthusiasm for life. At undergraduate level, I studied English language and linguistics, in which I took several modules about child language development and pedagogy. Around the same time, I began working at a pre-school, with children aged 0-5. This gave me the opportunity to observe what I was learning at university in real time. From the start, I have found working with children so fun and fulfilling. It was the combination of these two opportunities that inspired me to apply for a PGCE.
Why the University of Manchester?
Having moved away from Manchester for University, I felt as if I hadn’t experienced Manchester to its fullest. The city of Manchester has a personality no like no other. It is bright, friendly, and full of opportunity. I can definitely say since moving back to Manchester I have had endless fun, even while having placement responsibilities and assignments! The University of Manchester is well-renowned for its teacher training program due to the high standard of teaching. The lecturers on the course all have experience as teachers, which is highly valuable as they can relate to you and give you practical advice. It is important to have role models that have been in your position and succeeded.
The PGCE Primary course at the University of Manchester
The PGCE primary course is structured so that there is a good balance between university led-learning and in school-experience. The first six weeks of the course were based in university, where I learnt about pedagogical approaches, behaviour management strategies and strengthened my curriculum knowledge. This was vital in building my confidence before stepping into the classroom, which is then built up in small chunks. The course includes four short placements, including ‘ITAP days’ which are observation based, giving you the opportunity to learn from expert teachers before you teach yourself. The course also offers a placement with an inclusion focus, one with an EYFS focus and a day in KS3. This variety of experience can help you become an incredibly well-rounded teacher, preparing you for a long successful career!
Highlights of the PGCE Primary course at Manchester
The PGCE Primary team at Manchester is incredibly supportive at every step of teacher training. You will be assigned a ‘mentor’ and a ‘tutor’ while on the course, who are both there to support your professional development and wellbeing. Having two experienced individuals you can turn to at any point is so important as a trainee, as you will constantly have questions and even worries! They are there to reassure you, give you advice and keep track of your progress. It makes it easier when people can hold you accountable for your progress and help you set and meet targets.
Final advice
For anyone who is interested in studying a PGCE, Manchester is a great place to begin your journey. You will be situated in an uplifting, supportive environment where you can develop your professional skills, knowledge and behaviours.
