Why I Chose to Study MA International Education at The University of Manchester

For several years, I have been looking to continue my postgraduate education and complete a Master’s degree. I remember those days of researching profiles, curricula, and professors at different universities to find the right programme. It was an arduous task that required a lot of patience and emotional regulation; it was not an easy decision. But after careful analysis and dialogue with myself and colleagues, I applied to the programme I am now enrolled in: the Master’s in International Education at the University of Manchester.

Since my university training as an educator, I have been interested in the social responsibility of my field and the development of a global and interdisciplinary perspective on education in local, regional and international contexts. This programme integrates both in its analysis of international educational concepts, practices and policies, from a reflective and critical perspective that allows me to deepen my pedagogical knowledge and, at the same time, continue to build my identity as a person and professional interested in bringing about social change.

All of this aligned with my Peruvian reality and my personal goals as an educator. From the moment I researched this programme, I knew that my experience and knowledge could be integrated and discussed to contribute to the construction of learning within it. My voice would be heard, and this has been entirely true throughout my first semester. I have participated in discussions, debates, and casual conversations in which I exchange ideas, reflections, and practices that nourish my perspective and that of my classmates and professors.

Another aspect that piqued my interest is that the university and the programme focus on ethical, critical research with an eye toward others. This point was one of the decisive factors. As an educator, research is integral to my profession; I not only teach but also educate myself and conduct research to continue learning. That is why it was essential that both the university and my programme place special importance on research and on training researchers to be ethical and responsible in their actions in society.

Last but not least, I took the time to research not only the university and the programme, but also the new city that would be part of my life: Manchester. It is characterised by its innovative and hardworking spirit, as well as by a critical social vision, fundamental aspects that I seek in my quest to influence global education policy. On the other hand, I am interested in learning about its diversity and the artistic activities it offers, such as museums, events and festivals, which are also part of my learning process.

These were some of the reasons that influenced my decision to study the Master’s programme in International Education at the University of Manchester. As you can see, it was a combination of personal goals, programme and university characteristics, and elements of the city that motivated me to choose it. The information I found and the connection with my personal ideas helped me make a confident decision, for which I am now very grateful and ready to live this experience to the fullest. If you are in the process of searching, don’t worry, it can be overwhelming at first, but as you get to know and synthesise the information, everything will flow and align with you and what you are looking for.
