What to do before, during and after an offer holder day in Manchester
Offer-holder days are an exciting milestone in your university journey. They are your chance to step onto campus, picture yourself as a Manchester student, and decide whether this is the right place for you. Having attended offer-holder days myself, I found that a little preparation can really help you make the most of the experience. Here is my guide on what to do before, during, and after your visit to ensure you get the best out of your day.
Before: Research and Prepare
Before arriving in Manchester, it is worth checking the schedule sent out by the University, as well as browsing the University website and social media channels. Alongside the mandatory sessions for your course, there are often activities and drop-in events happening across campus on the same day.
I highly recommend doing some research about the specific places you want to see. Everyone’s priorities are different; you might be keen to explore specific accommodation, visit the Students’ Union, or see the high-tech study spaces in the Alliance Manchester Business School. One place I would always recommend visiting is the Students’ Union. It is a central hub of student life, and there is often something fun going on, such as poster fairs or vintage sales.
Most importantly, do not hesitate to write down a list of questions you want to ask. Think about what actually matters to your daily life—like how much time you will spend in labs, or where the best quiet study spots are. Having these ready in your notes app will make you feel much more confident when you arrive.
During: Engage and Inquire
Once you are on campus, the day is designed for you, so make sure to engage with the people around you. This is the best time to talk to Student Ambassadors (look for people in the purple hoodies!). They are present to give honest, “unfiltered” insights into the workload, teaching styles, and what life at Manchester is really like. They have been in your shoes, so no question it is too small or too silly.
You should also take the opportunity to speak with the Course Directors and academic staff. Talking to the staff can help you understand what the course is like in practice. Ask them about the modules, the assessment styles, and the career paths previous students have taken. In addition to this, if you have extra time, walk through the campus cafés or the Manchester Museum; watching current students go about their day can help you imagine what your own life here might look like.
After: Reflect and Decide
The journey does not end when you leave the campus. On your way home, take some time to reflect on the day. Ask yourself: How did the atmosphere feel? Could I see myself walking through these halls every day? Think about what you really enjoyed about Manchester. Maybe it was the impressive facilities, the greenery of Whitworth Park, or the buzz of Oxford Road. Reflecting on these feelings is just as important as the academic details. Use this time to compare your experience with your initial list of questions. Once you have processed the day, you will be in a much better position to decide if you want to accept your offer. Choosing a university is a big step, but if you feel excited about the environment and comfortable on campus, you will know you have found the right fit.
