When I began considering postgraduate study, I was already working as a senior high school English teacher in China. I was not just looking for a master’s degree. I wanted a programme that could help me find answers to the questions I had encountered in my teaching experience, such as grammar teaching, student motivation, intercultural communication, and the gap between exams and real language use.

The University of Manchester first caught my attention because of its strong academic reputation. However, what really made me choose the MA TESOL programme was how closely it aligned with my professional background. Our programme requires at least two years of teaching experience. It suggested that this was not a programme designed for beginners, but for experienced teachers who could bring real classroom experience into academic discussion. I was excited to learn with other teachers who had faced similar classroom challenges in different parts of the world.

After joining the programme, I quickly realised that this was exactly what I had hoped for. In many classes, the theories we explore often connect directly to situations I experienced before. Instead of learning abstract ideas, I often find myself reflecting on my own lessons and rethinking past decisions. Sometimes, a concept introduced in class suddenly helps me see something from my past teaching experience in a different way. That connection between theory and teaching experience has been one of the most valuable aspects of the programme for me.

Another highlight is the class size. There are fewer than 50 students in the MA TESOL programme, which means everyone has more opportunities to speak up in class and get to know both lecturers and classmates. The teaching staff know our names and encourage us to ask questions, share perspectives, and seek guidance whenever needed. They are always willing to support students, whether it’s about coursework, career advice, or settling into life in Manchester. This atmosphere makes it much easier to adapt to postgraduate study, especially as an international student.

Apart from the academic side, the city of Manchester also played an important role in my choice. It is lively and multicultural, with people from all over the world living and studying here. For someone studying TESOL, this is not just a lifestyle benefit but also part of the learning process. Hearing different accents and talking to people from different backgrounds have deepened my understanding of English as a global language. These experiences extend learning beyond the classroom.

At the same time, Manchester’s location also makes it very convenient to travel around the UK. Scotland to the north, London to the south, and Wales to the west are all close enough for a day trip. This means weekend adventures are not just possible, they are easy. Living here has helped me develop intercultural skills naturally, just by being part of this vibrant, welcoming community.

Looking back, choosing the MA TESOL programme at the University of Manchester was a decision I am very glad I made. It has enabled me to connect theory with practice and gain new insights in

a multicultural environment. For me, it has been an important step towards becoming a better English language teacher. Manchester is the perfect home base to explore the UK as I continue my studies.
