My Favourite Places in Manchester!
One of the main reasons I chose to study in Manchester was the vibrant nature of the city. It’s full of energy and always has something to do. Exploring the city has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my university experience and has helped me find a good balance between studying and social life. Over time, I’ve discovered a number of places that I keep coming back to. Here are some of my favourite spots in Manchester, and why I love them:
1. Study Spots
One of my favourite places to study in Manchester is the John Rylands Library. It’s incredible architecture, makes it feel like something out of Hogwarts, which always makes studying enjoyable! Another beautifully designed library is the Grand Central library, located near the university at the top of Oxford Road. I love coming here because it has such a calm and quiet environment that I find really motivating. Best of all, both libraries are free to enter and accessible.
2. Cafés and coffee shops
Manchester is packed with a wide range of unique cafes, which I’ve loved discovering. The café inside the Whitworth Art Gallery is one of my favourites, with its convenient location only a 10-minute walk from campus. What makes it special to me is that it overlooks Whitworth Park, so you can sit with a relaxing view of the trees and often the squirrels running around in them. Another place I often go to is Christie’s café on campus, inside Whitworth Hall. I like the library-like atmosphere, which makes it a great place to get some work done over a drink or snack. In the city centre, my favourite coffee ship is Tabitha’s coffee, which has recently gone viral for its cosy atmosphere and creative coffee toppings.
3. Restaurants
The curry mile is a place I often go to because it’s a great place to try difference foods and experience a variety of cultures. It is also conveniently located halfway between the university and Fallowfield campus. One of my favourite restaurants there is Chit ‘n’ Chaat, which serves delicious Indian street food. Another place I enjoy is Wolf at the Door in the city centre’s Northern Quarter. It quickly became one of my favourite budget-friendly restaurants after I discovered their delicious £6 meals which they serve from Sunday-Friday between 12-6pm.
4. Places for Activities
Some of my favourite memories in Manchester come activities in the city centre with my friends. We often go to Treetop mini golf, which is always a laugh and gets surprisingly competitive. For live music and a vibrant atmosphere, I love visiting the Blues Kitchen, especially since it has free entry and always delivers a great evening out. When I want something more relaxed, I enjoy going to the Odeon Great Northern Cinema., where
tickets are often around £6, making it an affordable way to unwind. Outside the city centre, I really enjoy visiting the Fletcher Moss gardens in Didsbury for a slower change of pace from the city. This is my go-to place in Manchester for a long walk, as it’s surrounded by beautiful greenery and wildlife.
