My Experience with the Student Visa Process as an International Student
Applying for my student visa was one of the most important parts of preparing to study at the University of Manchester, and honestly, it can be very stressful at the beginning. While receiving my offer was exciting, the visa process suddenly made everything feel very real. I remember feeling overwhelmed at first, unsure where to begin and worried about making mistakes that could delay my plans.
The process officially started once I received my CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). From there, I had to gather several documents, including proof of finances, my passport, and other supporting materials such as my language qualification and a UK Pre-Departure Tuberculosis Detection Programme medical certificate. Although the instructions were clearly outlined, I found that understanding exactly what was required took time. For example, preparing financial evidence was more detailed than I expected, and I had to double-check that everything met the specific requirements.
One of the biggest challenges for me was managing timelines. Booking a TB detection appointment wasn’t as straightforward as I expected. Depending on the country or region you live in, you may need to use different websites to book a slot. For example, in China, some hospitals rely on WeChat mini-programs and keep in mind that available slots fill up quickly. The key is to start early and keep track of your timeline (for example, how long it takes to prepare each document, including processing time). Giving yourself extra time can make a huge difference, especially if unexpected issues come up. Another challenge was dealing with uncertainty. After submitting my application, there was a waiting period where I constantly worried about whether I had done everything correctly. Looking back, I realise this is completely normal. Many international students go through the same experience, and delays or long waiting times are more common than you might think.
Through this process, I learned that organisation is essential. Keep both digital and printed copies of all your documents, and label everything clearly. This will save you time and reduce stress if you need to check anything quickly. Second, pay close attention to detail. Small mistakes, such as mismatched information or incorrect document formats, can cause unnecessary delays. Take the time to carefully review every part of your application before submitting it. Third, don’t hesitate to ask for help. The university’s support services and admissions teams are there for a reason. If you are unsure about any step, reaching out to your school’s admissions team can provide reassurance and clarity. Knowing that support is available made the process feel much more manageable for me. Finally, try to stay calm and patient. It’s easy to feel anxious during the process, but remember that thousands of students successfully apply for visas every year. As long as you follow the guidance and stay organised, you are on the right track.
Looking back now, although the visa application process felt daunting at the time, it was a valuable learning experience. It taught me how to manage important paperwork, stay
organised under pressure, and navigate an unfamiliar system. Most importantly, it was all worth it in the end. Arriving in Manchester and starting my university journey made every step of the process worthwhile.
If you are about to begin your own visa application, my biggest advice would be to start early, stay organised, and trust the process. You’ve already taken a big step by choosing to study abroad, and this is just one more step towards an exciting new chapter.
