Living in Student Accommodation and the Support from ResLife

Moving into student accommodation is one of the most exciting parts of starting university, but it can also feel a little overwhelming. For many of you, it may be your first time living away from home, sharing a kitchen with new people, or managing your own routine independently. At first, everything can feel unfamiliar, from finding your way around campus to getting used to living with flatmates. However, student accommodation quickly becomes more than just a place to sleep. It can become a supportive community where you meet new people, build confidence, and start to feel at home.

One of the best things about living in student accommodation is the opportunity to meet other students who are going through similar experiences. Whether it is chatting with flatmates in the kitchen, cooking meals together, or simply saying hello in the corridor, small interactions can help build friendships. Living close to other students makes it easier to socialise, especially during the first few weeks when everyone is trying to settle in. Even if you feel nervous at first, it is reassuring to know that many people feel the same way.
The ResLife team plays an important role in helping students feel connected to their accommodation community. Throughout the year, they organise different events and activities that give you the chance to meet others in a relaxed and friendly environment. For example, during Halloween, there may be themed activities such as pumpkin carving, common room decoration, or social gatherings. These events are a fun way to take a break from studying and enjoy seasonal celebrations with other students.

ResLife support was also especially meaningful for me during my first winter break away from home. For many students, particularly international students or those who live far away from home, it may not be possible to return for Christmas or New Year. This can sometimes feel lonely, especially when many other students have left accommodation for holidays. Events such as Christmas dinners can make a big difference. They give you the chance to celebrate together, share food, meet others in a similar situation, and feel a sense of belonging even when you are away from your families.

Another important part of ResLife is the support they provide when you are finding things difficult. University life can come with challenges, such as homesickness, stress, loneliness, or worries about living with others. Having a team available within accommodation can make you feel more secure. Even if you do not need support straight away, it is comforting to know that there are people you can speak to if something feels difficult. ResLife can help guide students towards the right support services and offer advice on common accommodation issues.

Living in student accommodation also helps you develop independence. You learn practical skills such as cooking, cleaning, budgeting, doing laundry, and managing your time. You also learn how to share spaces respectfully and communicate with different people. These everyday experiences may seem small, but they are an important part of growing as a student and becoming more confident.
My advice to future students is to make the most of accommodation life. Go to at least one ResLife event, even if you feel nervous, because it could be the place where you meet a new friend. Say hello to your flatmates, ask for help when you need it, and give yourself time to settle in. Student accommodation is not just about having a room near campus. It is about finding community, support, and a place where you can begin your university journey with confidence.
