After being inspired by my English teachers during my GCSE’s, I continued my studies with A-Level’s in English Literature, English Language, and Sociology. I then went on to study English Language and Literature at the University of Leeds, graduating in 2023. Wanting to follow my passion for English and my family’s tradition of teaching, I chose to pursue a career in education and complete a PGCE at The University of Manchester in 2024.

Why I chose PGCE Secondary (English)

I chose the PGCE Secondary (English) programme because it offered the 11–18 pathway, allowing experience across the full secondary and further education age range. The University of Manchester’s strong reputation for teacher training and its focus on developing confident, reflective teachers were also key factors. As a local student, it also allowed me to study closer to home, with opportunities to gain experience in a range of local schools and settings.

Memorable experiences or key takeaways from your time here

I particularly enjoyed the university seminars and lectures, and building strong relationships with my cohort. My placements were a highlight, offering experience across secondary schools,

grammar schools, colleges, and some primary exposure. I also valued working with and learning from teachers, mentors, and trainees across different subject areas, which broadened my perspective and practice.

Your career development or current role since graduating / How the course supported your career development

Since graduating, I have almost completed my ECT Year 2 at a secondary school in Blackburn. Alongside teaching English, I have taken on additional responsibilities, including leading a team of student leaders. The PGCE gave me a strong foundation in planning, assessment, behaviour management, pastoral care, and safeguarding, which I continue to draw on in my current role, including when supporting trainee teachers and ECT Year 1 colleagues.

Advice for future PGCE applicants

● Be prepared for a challenge – it is demanding but rewarding

● Stay open-minded – feedback is key to development

● Get organised early – time management is essential

● Make the most of placements – observe and ask questions

● Remember your motivation – it will carry you through busy periods
