Manchester is one of the UK’s most vibrant student cities, and once you start exploring, it’s easy to see why. From world-class art galleries to brunch spots, there’s always something new to discover. Here are some of my favourite things to do and places to eat during your time here.

Brunch and Café Culture in the Northern Quarter
If you haven’t spent a lazy weekend morning in the Northern Quarter yet, add it to your list immediately. This indie neighbourhood is packed with some of Manchester’s best cafés and eateries. Café North is a local favourite for its relaxed atmosphere and great coffee. For that stripped-back, Melbourne-style café experience, head to Federal, always busy and always worth the wait. The Northern Quarter is also perfect for an afternoon wander through its independent record shops, vintage boutiques and street art.

Get Moving with ClassPass
University life is about more than studying and staying active is a great way to manage stress and meet new people. ClassPass gives you access to hundreds of fitness studios across the city, from yoga and Pilates to spin and boxing, so you can mix things up and find what works for you without being locked into one gym membership.

Free Art and Culture
One of the best-kept secrets of student life in Manchester is just how much world-class culture you can access for free. The Manchester Art Gallery in the city centre houses an impressive permanent collection spanning centuries of art, and entry is completely free. The Whitworth Gallery near campus is another must-visit. Following a major refurbishment, it has been transformed into a stunning space where floor-to-ceiling windows and a treetop café help frame a diverse and inclusive collection of artworks. It’s the kind of place you can spend an entire afternoon without even noticing.

Castlefield Viaduct: Manchester’s High Line
For something a little unexpected, visit Castlefield Viaduct, Manchester’s answer to New York’s famous High Line. Originally built as a railway in 1892, this elevated structure fell into disrepair before the National Trust stepped in to transform it into a beautiful park in the sky. It’s the perfect spot for a walk, a quiet moment, or some seriously good photos.

HOME: Arts, Film and Everything In Between
If you’re looking for one venue that does it all, HOME in the city centre is it. Born from the merger of Cornerhouse and the Library Theatre Company, it brings together two theatres, five cinemas, a flexible gallery space and plenty of spots to eat and drink, all under one roof. Whether you’re catching an independent film, an art exhibition or a theatre production, HOME has something on every week.

Chinatown
No guide to Manchester would be complete without mentioning Chinatown. One of the largest in the UK, it’s brilliant for affordable, authentic food, perfect for a student budget. Grab dim sum, hot pot or bubble tea and soak up the atmosphere.
