Meet the team: Dr Javier Pinto Aguirre

I am Javier, a Postdoctoral Research Associate within the Manchester Fungal Infection Group. My academic career has mainly focused on evolutionary biology.

In my previous research, I focused on the adaptive evolution of interspecific hybrids using experimental evolution. I also worked towards furthering our understanding of molecular mechanisms in adaptation to cold temperatures, including the role of promoter and allele type. This research also sheds light on epigenetic mechanisms that may be related to cold tolerance.

Currently, I am investigating potential genetic factors governing sexual compatibility in Aspergillus fumigatus, beyond mating ability controlled by either of the two forms of the MAT locus. I aim to establish a mate preference network among crossing partners to understand the mechanisms controlling mating choice that contribute to fungal adaptation, so that evolutionary risk can be assessed.

A. fumigatus has been split into two main and up to five total phylogenetic groups, and a certain degree of reproductive isolation has been suggested. Strains from these groups are widespread in diverse environments, including soils, decaying vegetation, and hospital patients, presenting a high chance of mating driven by mate choice.

Understanding the genetic factors of mate choice can shed light on antifungal resistance mechanisms and improve our understanding of the role of sexual reproduction in the adaptation of A. fumigatus.
