My name is Julie and I’m in my second year of BSc Economics. This small blog is to help any offer holders learn more the University from my experience!

I had chosen this subject at Manchester because of the academic prestige of the university as well as their academic performance on research papers. I never would have thought that I would be having as much fun as I am now.

My Course is structured like most 3-year courses at Manchester. We have 120 credits in total where we have 80 compulsory credits in subjects. These included: microeconomics; macroeconomics; mathematical economics; econometrics. These subjects cover the core understandings of what I learnt in first year as well as the key ideas that I need to bring forward in my studies. The rest of the 40 credits are left as optional modules and gives us as students the availability to start creating a niche and widen our knowledge on subjects that entirely interest us.

One of my optional modules last year was ‘Economic History’. Despite my passion for Economics, I also have a love for History. This optional module had turned out to be my favourite subject in first year. Being able to study the history of economics and some clear figures that influenced the economic models we use and apply today was very interesting to me.

It isn’t only the subject that makes life at Manchester amazing, it’s also because of the people and the welcoming spirit. I have found so many likeminded people on my course where we have created a supportive friendship group when we are struggling with our subject. It’s easy to make friends outside of my course as well. With the massive number of societies at university, like the baking society, I’m able to pursue other hobbies. Being second year has highlighted how many people I have created good friendships with. My housemates this year have shown me how amazing this university is and how you can find your group.

Not only does the university of Manchester provide an amazing course with intensive support from both the lecturers and tutors, but it also gives a welcoming environment that makes it easy to find your place at Manchester.

When you get to university, as general as it sounds, put yourself out there! Make the most of the what the university offers and don’t be afraid to leave your comfort zone. It’s such a small period of time being at university, so make the most of every second!
