Richard Williams-Lees – LLB Law (2011)

Richard is the Co-founder & Chief Executive of McCollum Consultants. He talks about how he got there following his time studying law at the University of Manchester.

My current role and how I got there

I was called to the bar at the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn having read law at the University of Manchester. From there, I specialised in clinical negligence before establishing Cardiovascular Advisors Ltd with Professor Charles McCollum, which was the precursor to McCollum Consultants Ltd.

My university experience at Manchester

I wanted to study at a leading institution and The University of Manchester is recognised globally.

Prior to studying law, I trained as a classical pianist. I had always envisaged combining music and law. However, having been called to the bar in 2015, I was offered an opportunity in clinical negligence. It was this opportunity that led to me meeting my business partner Professor Charles McCollum.

How did your law course set you up for your career path?

The course equipped me with the ability to negotiate, problem-solve, resolve conflicts and work under pressure. Without that, the company I lead would not be the success that it is.

My advice for future students?

When I started the course, Dinah Crystal OBE recommended that the degree be treated like a job – this is the one piece of advice that I would want to pass on.
