How to make friends at the university

When I first arrived in Manchester, I had a lot of concerns. I was concerned about how I would get on with school (especially because I haven’t been to school in years!), I wanted to know how I would get used to the weather, but most importantly, I was concerned about how I would make friends at uni.

If you are socially awkward like me, then you’ve probably wondered the same thing. If this topic makes you feel uncomfortable and even gets your heart racing a bit, then this article is for you. Join me as I share how I made my life at uni easier by becoming friends with great people.

First, put a smile on your face. If you want to make friends, you will have to make yourself friendly. Smiling is an invitation for people to talk to you. Also, saying good morning to your classmates when you enter your classroom, not only shows that you have good manners but it makes you seem more friendly and polite.

Second, join groups that share your common interests. If you joined a group or club that you’re interested in, it’s probably reasonable to assume that you’ll eventually find friends who are like-minded and who probably wouldn’t mind your quirks. The Student Union has a variety of clubs and societies that you can join such as, India Society, Language Society, or African Caribbean Society. One tip you can follow is start with your classmates – try to find classmates that share your interests or see if they are from the same city or region that you’re from.  If you don’t have any hobbies, then you can consider joining a volunteer group that interests you.

Third, use your immediate family and friends to make new friends. Ask your relatives if they know anyone going to your university. You’ll be surprised to know that your network may eventually get larger by meeting people who already know your friends and family.

Fourth, the best way to make friends here is to learn about the British culture so that you can have something to chat about with your new peers. One way to do this is by going on trips around the UK with the international society. I personally know many students who have connected with great people through international society’s parties and trips.

All in all, remember that you have likable qualities so don’t be discouraged if you don’t make friends quickly. The great qualities you have will attract people to you, so tap into your fun personality so that your new friends can see who you truly are. Also, remember that if you need to change your personality to make friends, then you should find different people to connect with. True friends will accept you just the way you are. And I’m sure that if you follow these tips, you’ll eventually find lovely people to hang out with.
