Embarking on a Postgraduate journey at Alliance Manchester Business School has been an enlightening experience, and as an international student from Malaysia, the prospect of securing a job in the UK after completing my MSc in Organisational Psychology is an exciting yet challenging endeavour. Fortunately, The University of Manchester’s Postgraduate Careers Services has proven to be an invaluable ally on this professional odyssey.

One of the standout features of the Careers Service is the weekly drop-in sessions, where Careers Consultants generously offer their time for one-on-one discussions. These sessions provide a welcoming space where I can seek advice on any career-related queries, or have my CV, application, or cover letter reviewed. The professionalism and friendliness of the consultants and advisors create an atmosphere conducive to learning and growth.

The team’s commitment to fostering a strong community is evident in events like the Alumni Careers Insight Conferences. These conferences are a treasure trove of wisdom, featuring accomplished alumni who generously share their tips and insights on job searching and working in the UK. The added networking time, complete with a cup of tea, allows for meaningful connections with the panellists and other students, transforming these events into more than just informational sessions—they become opportunities to build lasting relationships.

Moreover, the plethora of practical workshops and sessions offered by the Careers Service is truly commendable. As a first-hand participant in the weekly sessions, I find them to be interactive and very practical. Covering everything from understanding the UK job market to identifying one’s strengths and crafting a CV, these sessions are designed to guide students step-by-step in achieving their final goal. Also, what makes them truly exceptional is their inclusivity, bringing together students from various departments and courses. This not only enhances the learning experience but also provides a unique avenue for networking and forging friendships beyond academic boundaries.

Other than that, the Careers Service website is a goldmine of resources, with my personal favourite being the step-by-step career readiness modules. Broken down into manageable headings, these modules incorporate insightful videos and informative articles that demystify the intricacies of the UK job market. The website also serves as a centralized hub for upcoming events, allowing students to register and stay informed. A dedicated job section further empowers students to explore available opportunities—a testament to the department’s commitment to facilitating every aspect of our professional growth.

In essence, the Careers Services at The University of Manchester has become my compass in navigating the intricate landscape of the working world. It goes beyond the conventional role of a service provider; it is a partner in my journey towards building a successful career. As someone who once perceived job searching as a daunting task, the department’s step-by-step approach has transformed it into a manageable, even enjoyable, process. The career services team has crafted a roadmap of building blocks that not only guides but empowers students, ensuring that our aspirations are not merely goals but tangible achievements.

As a student joining the vibrant community at Alliance Manchester Business School, I am not just gaining an education; I am gaining a support system that extends beyond the classroom. The Careers Service is not merely a resource—it is a catalyst propelling student towards fulfilling and impactful careers. I am immensely grateful for the guidance and support they provide, knowing that they play an instrumental role in shaping not just my academic journey but my professional future as well.
