Welcome to a captivating journey through the corridors of learning and discovery in the dynamic MA in Gender, Sexuality, and Culture program at the University of Manchester. Here we delve into a kaleidoscope of theories, seminars, socials, and enriching opportunities that define this immersive academic odyssey. Students from diverse disciplines like literature, politics, history, social sciences, philosophy, etc can curate and choose the modules divided through 180 credits according to their research interests and preferences.

Studying the Course: Unraveling Complexities

At the heart of this course lies a mosaic of theories that stretch across identity politics, intersectionality, the history of sexuality, and the intricate web of queer theory. These theories aren’t just pages in textbooks; they serve as windows into understanding the multifaceted layers of society and culture, carving paths for critical thinking and profound discourse. The Centre for the Study of Sexuality and Culture (CSSC), the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in the Arts and Languages (CIDRAL) , the Feminist Theory Network, and the Cultural Theory Institute provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the research environment in the UK’s first research facility focusing on the relationship between Gender, Sexuality, Culture, and History.

Favourite Module: Embracing the Core

One cannot help but revel in the richness of the core module, Critical Thinking in Gender, Sexuality, and Culture which acts as a melting pot of diverse theories. From the historical roots of sexuality to the transformative power of intersectional theory, this module offers a tapestry of perspectives that broaden horizons and challenge conventional narratives. Here, students engage in vibrant discussions, unraveling complexities, and nurturing intellectual curiosity. The MA module aims to foster critical thinking and exploration of emerging feminist and queer viewpoints. Beyond the classroom, it imparts employability skills such as teamwork, written communication, and the ability to construct intricate arguments. This session serves as an opportunity to broaden our perspectives, challenge preconceptions, and attain a profound understanding of the intricate relationship between gender, sexuality, and human identity.

The first semester has been a whirlwind of exploration and revelation. Navigating through intricate theories and ideologies, students have embraced academic rigor while fostering a collaborative environment. Seminars and mind mapping sessions have been both tools for learning and catalysts for critical thinking, enriching the academic journey each week accumulating into essay assignments and feedback.

In a typical week, students experience a blend of lectures, seminars, and intensive readings twice a week diving deep into the core module’s themes. Moreover, social events like cinema socials serve as platforms for unwinding, connecting with peers, and exploring concepts beyond the classroom.
