Have you noticed the captivating red lanterns adorning the streets of Manchester? As we welcome the Year of the Dragon, red envelopes and all things red permeate our festivities, symbolizing good luck and prosperity. Let me take you on a journey through Manchester during this festive season and share some of my favorite ways to celebrate.

Lunar New Year, being the most important festival in Asian countries, can be considered as the equivalent to Christmas in the UK. As an International student from Hong Kong and despite being away from home, Manchester has a lot to offer during this occasion that can surely help with homesick. The heart of Lunar New Year lies in Manchester Chinatown. As soon as you step into the streets adorned with red lanterns and dragon motifs, you can feel the energy and excitement in the air. During the weekend from 10 to 11 February, Chinatown will be celebrating with live performances, fun fair and street food stalls. The highly anticipated part of the celebration must be the annual Dragon Parade on that Sunday. Dragons are a symbol of good luck, health and strength in Chinese culture, and dragon dances are performed at the start of the New Year to chase away evil spirits and welcome in prosperous times.

One of the highlights of Lunar New Year celebrations is undoubtedly the food when Manchester is home to many authentic Chinese restaurants. Whether you’re craving traditional dishes like roasted duck and dim sum or sweet treats like bubble tea and pineapple buns, there’s something for everyone to indulge in. Traditional Turnip Cake (Lo Bak Go) and glutinous rice cake are also a popular choice for the occasion!

If you are interested in cultural activities and would like to explore more about Asian cultures, our own Manchester Museum is perfect for you! Join them on 7 February before the Lunar New Year arrives, which includes a lion dance, bracelet making workshop, Taichi taster session, an Origami workshop and some live music performance. Best of all, the event is entirely free, but be sure to reserve your tickets online to secure your spot.

But perhaps the most cherished moments are those spent in the company of friends, both old and new. Lunar New Year in Manchester truly embodies the spirit of our multicultural city and reminds us of the beauty of diversity. It may be different from the celebrations back home, but its essence remains unchanged—a time to honor tradition, loved ones, and embrace the spirit of renewal. So, as we bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new, I invite you to join me in celebrating Lunar New Year in Manchester. May the Year of Dragon bring you joy, prosperity, and the warmth of community wherever you may be.
