What to expect from your first week studying BSc Accounting

Beginning the BSc Accounting course in the month of change, Autumn, is very fitting for such a great milestone! Everything is new: the academics, the responsibilities, the social life, and the list goes on. So, what is there to expect from this amazing first week?

Starting off, academic life and responsibilities are eased into you in the first week. You are introduced to all the interesting modules you’ll be delving into for the rest of the year. You’ll meet your lecturers, who will begin guiding you through what each module is going to be like. You learn how to navigate their class and how to best target your studies. A holistic approach is taken, from bigger things like broader module aims to the small details of expected study hours and lecture structure.

After those bases are laid out, you will start your knowledge journey into all these aspects of the world of Accounting. You will begin building Accounting up from its basics and the other supplemental aspects that surround it. You will learn to navigate the university systems (which will become an essential source of information for you), get guidance and support from your academic advisor, and familiarise yourself with your peers.

What follows your lectures is your own self-study programme. You will begin analysing and making lecture notes, get started on your assigned readings, or get thinking about assignments and projects.

The first week is for settling into your academic role. You are being given all the tools you need to help you forge a plan for a successful academic year! Now is your time to start preparing your approach to the challenge that is university.

Second is how your new daily life begins forming from this first week. There are a variety of welcome events going on, a whole campus to slowly explore with every new lecture class and friendships to fall into.

One of the best experiences is the buzzing atmosphere all-round the campus. You can build an easy – sometimes even random – and meaningful connection with someone, either just by sitting next to them in a lecture room or attending any of the ongoing events!

This is a time of exploration! You will begin visiting your soon-to-be-main spots: the business school, the libraries and the students’ union (amongst others)! You will start trying new things: join a society, admire the green areas, take a shot at a ‘Sporticipate’ event, start thinking about leadership and the ‘Stellify’ programme or volunteer. The city is also a wonder to take in step by step; with its museums, canals and many more sights to behold.

By the end of the first week, despite a full timetable of lectures and events, and the sheer volume of new information you receive, it all goes by in a flash! This week is the first step you take as you slowly integrate into your new life! Everything is a new challenge for you to conquer and there are opportunities for you everywhere!
