Hear from Jan on what he loves about studying BA Social Sciences at Manchester.

Hi! I’m Jan, I do BA Social Sciences, specialising in Sociology and Criminology.

What is BA Social Sciences?

It’s a joint honours courses, and it’s really flexible. You can choose between six subjects from the social sciences. It’s quite easy to balance your time as it’s nine hours of contact hours, and then independent study. It’s really fun content that you’re learning. You can pick and choose the course units that you’re really interested in, within the disciplines that you’ve chosen.

What’s your favourite part of studying BA Social Sciences at Manchester?

The flexibility. I don’t think I would have gotten it from anywhere else, I don’t know any other university that does such an interdisciplinary program and has such a wide range of subjects.

What’s your favourite memory from your time at Manchester?

My favourite memory is definitely the end of your summer ball that I organised last year, when I was president of the BA Social Sciences society.

What are your plans after you graduate?

I’ll probably apply for a government civil service fast track scheme. I’d recommend anyone in the social sciences to keep their options open, because it’s more focused on transferable skills. You could get jobs in teaching or academia, or public
sector work, NGO work. I also want to shed light on the private sector, so you can go into industries such as insurance or consulting or even banking, because when you look at graduate schemes or internships, they’ll just ask for a degree in any subject.
