Driving Change in the Creative Industries: Yasmin Ali’s Journey at the University of Manchester
I chose to study MA Creative and Cultural Industries as I have been working in the UK television industry for several years, and in my career, I have been working to improve diversity, inclusion and access in the sector but felt that I needed to expand my knowledge around policies and frameworks for change. The MA Creative and Cultural Industries course at UoM offered comprehensive and enticing course units that were exactly what I was looking for.
I decided on the University of Manchester as it is a leading research institution with a track record for innovation and academic excellence. The University also has strong connections with industry and international businesses. I also read the work of some of my lecturers before applying and knew that I wanted to study under them. Overall, the University of Manchester has a fantastic reputation and though I have only been here for a couple of months, I can totally see why.
The highlight of my course so far has been learning about the future of AI in the creative and cultural industries. As technology continues to rapidly evolve, there’s no doubt that the use of AI will become more prevalent. It has been so interesting to debate the positive uses of AI versus the limitations or ethical concerns it may raise. Furthermore, I have been enjoying the cultural policy module and looking at policies in CCIs around the world. I have also loved getting to know the other students on my course who come from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
I commute from Liverpool, but I have worked in Manchester for years, so I know the city very well. The people are so friendly, and the diverse communities make the city vibrant and full of life. Manchester is a city full of culture so there is always something on. There are incredible cultural institutions around the city and having them so close to the university is wonderful for my course. There are also plenty of cosy cafes to study in, but I have found myself frequenting the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons for deep study sessions or essay writing.
After graduation, I hope to continue working in the Creative and Cultural Industries equipped with the new knowledge and tools I have acquired through the MA programme here at Manchester. I am committed to continuing my work for better diversity and inclusion within the UK television industry, and the wider creative industries as a whole.
I was able to pursue my postgraduate degree thanks to a Scholarship from the Aziz Foundation. I am honoured to be supported by the Aziz Foundation and hope to inspire the next generation of Muslim creatives to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact on society.
