Finding My Voice: Studying MusM Composition (Instrumental and Vocal) at Manchester University
I studied electroacoustic music during my undergraduate years, and over the course of my studies, I developed a strong interest in contemporary music. Although my composition skills are relatively basic, I have been passionate about composition since I applied for my undergraduate program. Therefore, I applied for the MusM Composition (Instrumental and Vocal) program at the University of Manchester with the aim of refining my compositional abilities, expanding my thinking in the field of composition, and deepening my understanding and research of contemporary music—an area that was not covered extensively in my undergraduate studies.
I chose The University of Manchester for its dynamic musical community and strong focus on contemporary music and composition. The University provides valuable resources and fosters collaboration, allowing me to engage with talented peers and professionals. Through research seminars, workshops, and concerts, I can enhance my academic and communication skills. I am confident that Manchester’s supportive environment will help me develop my compositional voice and achieve meaningful growth in my craft.
The best thing about living and studying in Manchester is being surrounded by a vibrant, diverse cultural scene that truly celebrates the arts. With its wide range of concerts, festivals, and art events, the city offers endless opportunities for creative inspiration. Plus, Manchester’s welcoming community and dynamic student life make it easy to connect with people from all over the world, enriching both my personal and academic experience. A highlight of my course so far has been the exposure to many contemporary composers I had not encountered before, especially those who are still active today. The course also incorporates examples of contemporary music from various cultural traditions, which has broadened my knowledge and enhanced my appreciation for diversity in music.
After graduation, I plan to explore opportunities in the music industry, focusing on composition. My time at university has been invaluable in enhancing my career prospects. The rigorous coursework has deepened my understanding of music theory and composition, while collaborative projects have improved my communication and teamwork skills. I’m also considering further study to specialize more deeply in a particular area, such as music technology or advanced composition techniques.
