Kartika Negara – MA Educational Leadership – Alumni Profile
Before pursuing the MA Educational Leadership at the University of Manchester, I worked as an English teacher at SMP Negeri 2 Sukadana and later at SMP Negeri 1 Sukadana in Kayong Utara, Indonesia. I had always been passionate about teaching and improving educational practices, but I felt the need to enhance my leadership skills to better support my students and colleagues in their professional development. My background in English Language Teaching laid the foundation for my interest in leadership within education, which led me to seek further knowledge through the MA Educational Leadership program. The decision to join the MA Educational Leadership program was a crucial step in my career.
I chose this program because of its comprehensive curriculum, which emphasized practical leadership strategies and the challenges of educational leadership in real-world contexts. The program at the University of Manchester stood out due to its global reputation and the
opportunity it provided to connect with peers from diverse educational backgrounds. I believed that the program would equip me with the necessary tools to drive positive change in the educational systems, particularly in rural areas like Kayong Utara, where I teach.
One of the most memorable aspects of my time at the University of Manchester was the opportunity to engage with international peers and faculty, each bringing unique perspectives to discussions on leadership. I particularly appreciated the case studies and hands-on projects that allowed me to apply the theories and concepts in practical settings. The learning environment fostered deep reflection on my own teaching practices and leadership style, enabling me to develop a clearer vision for how I could contribute to education in my community. Since completing the program, I have been fortunate to hold leadership roles that allow me to apply the skills and knowledge I gained.
Currently, I serve as the Head of Domestic and International Relations at PGRI Kayong Utara Regency Board, where I manage partnerships and facilitate educational exchange programs. Additionally, I am the Community of Practice (CoP) Leader for the British Council, working on developing contextual English resources for remote areas of Kayong Utara. These roles have allowed me to enhance my leadership capabilities and have opened doors for further career opportunities in education. The MA Educational Leadership program was instrumental in supporting my career development by providing me with critical insights into the roles of educational leaders.
I gained valuable skills in areas such as strategic thinking, decision making, and managing educational change. The program’s focus on evidence based leadership practices and its emphasis on professional development have directly influenced how I approach leadership in my current role. It has also given me the confidence to lead initiatives that improve educational access and quality
for students in rural areas.
For those considering the MA Educational Leadership program, my advice is to fully engage with the coursework and the opportunities it presents. The program is demanding, but it offers the chance to grow both personally and professionally. Take advantage of the networking opportunities and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds. The knowledge and skills gained will help you become a more effective leader, capable of addressing the complex challenges faced by educational systems today. Looking back on my experience, I am grateful for the transformative impact the MA Educational Leadership program had on my career. It has provided me with the leadership skills, practical knowledge, and global perspective I needed to take on greater responsibilities and contribute
meaningfully to educational advancement in Indonesia. I am proud to be an alumni of the University of Manchester and excited to continue contributing to the educational community in the years to come
