1. A brief overview of your background before joining the programme

Before joining the University of Manchester, I had already completed an MBA and had around five years of professional experience working with marketing agencies in India. I decided to pursue a second Master’s degree in the UK at the age of 26, as my first postgraduate experience during COVID did not allow me to fully experience campus life or international academic culture. I came to Manchester from India with a strong foundation in marketing and a clear interest in media and communications, seeking both academic depth and a vibrant university environment.

2. Why you chose MSc Marketing at The University of Manchester

Marketing has always been closely aligned with my academic background and personality, so choosing MSc Marketing felt like a natural progression. I was particularly drawn to the programme because it offers opportunities to work with real companies while studying, allowing theory to be applied in practice. I chose the University of Manchester over other UK universities because of its strong global
reputation, well-structured course content, and the lively student culture associated with the city. The prestige of AMBS, the beautiful campus, and the strong student union were key factors, as I wanted to study in a dynamic and social environment after the isolation of the COVID years.

3. Memorable experiences or key takeaways from your time here

Two of my most memorable experiences were becoming a Student Representative for my cohort and working in my first part-time role at the Students’ Union. These roles helped me build confidence, leadership skills, and a sense of belonging within the university community. While many of my classmates came straight from undergraduate study, I formed lasting friendships through my on-campus accommodation, which became an important support system during the year. Academically, working closely with supportive professors and participating in my capstone project with Procter & Gamble was a defining moment. Being invited to present our project to P&G’s wider Poland team reinforced my belief that I had chosen the right university. Key takeaways from my time at AMBS include practical marketing skills, international exposure, strong communication and presentation abilities, and increased confidence in professional environments.

4. Your career development or current role since graduating

I secured a role at Oxford University Press as a Performance Marketing Manager even before submitting my dissertation, which marked a significant milestone at the start of my career in the UK. In this role, I managed digital performance marketing campaigns across platforms such as Google, Meta, and LinkedIn, contributing to the organisation’s international marketing efforts. Working at Oxford University Press was a defining professional experience and a strong validation of the skills and confidence I developed during my time at AMBS. After a year at Oxford University Press, I made a personal decision to return to India to pursue my mum’s long-term aspiration of building something of our own in the creative space. I am currently the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) of our own art venture, Kala Hue – Arts by Neha (Instagram: @kala.hue), where I combine my marketing expertise with my passion for art and entrepreneurship. While I could have continued my career in the UK, returning to my home country to establish my own studio was a deliberate and meaningful step in shaping my professional identity.

5. How the course supported your career development

The MSc Marketing programme supported my career development through a blend of academic rigour, practical exposure, and professional credibility. Modules such as B2B Marketing directly support my current work, while the capstone project strengthened my presentation, communication, and stakeholder management skills — all of which are crucial in my role today. The University Careers Service played a significant role in my journey, as both of my part-time roles during my studies were secured through the University of Manchester careers portal. My work as a Student Ambassador and involvement with the Students’ Union gave me opportunities to travel for university projects and gain real-world experience in communication and marketing. The combination of academic learning, applied projects, and professional opportunities helped shape both my confidence and employability.

6. Any advice you’d offer to future applicants

My advice to future students would be to become proactive as soon as you arrive. Whether you come with prior work experience or straight from undergraduate study, finding a part-time role, ideally within the University, can make a huge difference. It helps you earn alongside your studies, build professional experience, develop essential soft skills, and expand your network. Make full use of the University Careers Service, speak to your professors, and never hesitate to ask questions or seek support. Engage with your peers, especially those you live with, and avoid isolating yourself. Even small interactions can make a meaningful difference to your overall experience. If you are graduating in September, I would strongly recommend starting your job applications by May or June, particularly if you plan to submit your dissertation in August. The job market can feel challenging, but it is often only difficult if your CV and application strategy are not well prepared. This is where the University of Manchester’s career support becomes invaluable — take advantage of CV reviews, application guidance, and employability workshops. Attend the foundational sessions at the start of the programme to strengthen your marketing fundamentals, and remember to enjoy the year alongside your academic commitments. It passes very quickly, and with the right balance of study, work, and social life, it can become one of the most memorable and rewarding years of your life.
