Hi I’m Katie. I’m joining the MFIG lab as a research technician on the FAILSAFE project which is investigating the effect of agricultural pesticide use on antifungal resistance in the treatment of Aspergillosis, an infectious disease caused by the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. My background is somewhat varied, having studied for my BSc in Biology at Sheffield Hallam and then going on to work in various microbiology labs and in general technician roles, as well as a few years in the medical communications sector, and then more recently, working in the Soil and Ecosystem Ecology lab group in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, here at the University of Manchester, where my work focused on the interactions between ectomycorrhizal fungi and pine and birch trees.

I’m looking forward to applying my skills in mycology and soil science to a new area, and to developing my microbiology skills and knowledge of antimicrobial resistance. Everyone in the MFIG group has been really welcoming and I’m excited to get to know them more and be part of the team.
