Translation of PHQ-9, GAD-7 and Social Adjustment scale

The translation of ‘Patient Health Questionnaire’, ‘Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7’, and the ‘Work and Social Adjustment Scale’ into British Sign Language, followed by a pilot study

This project concerns three outcome measures that are part of the minimum data set collected in the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) national (England) programme.

The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) measure depression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) measure anxiety, and the Work and Social Adjustment Scale measure the functioning of the person. The aims of the study were:

  • to translate the 3 assessments into BSL;
  • to pilot the BSL versions; and
  • to establish their validity and reliability.
