BSc Economics student, Aryaman Talukdar, shares his experience of studying at The University of Manchester.

Choosing Economics at UoM

Female student watching a lecturer deliver a seminarEconomics has always been a subject has hat intrigued me and I often found myself reading up on various topics during my time at school. I also enjoyed Maths, so it seemed like a wise decision to move forward with a BSc in Economics because it involves the application of mathematical analysis to break down policies and behaviours in markets.

I chose to study at Manchester because I had always wanted to study in a diverse city where I could experience world-class teaching. It goes without saying that The University of Manchester ticked both of these boxes so it was the perfect place for me. When it came to applying for universities, I also discovered that there was a wide range of student resources and support services which confirmed to me that this was the place for me.

Course highlights and challenges

The main personal highlight for me so far was receiving good first-year grades. It’s always a daunting experience starting university and you are never quite sure how you are going to adapt so to come out of my first year with good grades was something I was really proud of.

The most challenging aspect was actually getting to grips with economics. Although I was always intrigued by the subject, I had never actually studied it before so there was a lot to get my head around. But, with enough revision and with help from academics, I was able to get over this fairly quickly.

My key course interests

The area of economics that I find myself enjoying the most is econometrics. I believe it to be the most practical application of economics in real-life. I also like the use of programming languages in analysing data in econometrics.

My student experience so far

The University Place building on campusMy student experience so far has been great. I really enjoy my course and studying in Manchester, and I think the University is a great fit for me.

Meeting students from all corners of the world and being able to experience new things has been amazing. There truly is something for everyone in Manchester.

Extracurricular activities

I volunteer for Enactus, where we work towards sustainable and social causes. I am also part of the MFC equity student society where we manage an investment fund.

I would definitely recommend joining societies as it can help you in discovering new interests and potentially help you to figure out the type of career that you would like to get into.

The future

After graduation, I would like to either start a career in the financial services industry or continue with further studies in economics, or something similar.
